What is ultra precision polishing?
Superfinishing is a metal processing technique used to improve the surface smoothness and geometric dimensions of workpieces. This technology uses grinding stones or polishing belts to remove only a thin layer (usually 1 μ m) of irregular surface on the workpiece, in order to improve part size and enhance surface performance.
How is ultra precision polishing carried out?
The difference between ultra precision polishing and ordinary polishing is that after ordinary polishing, the surface of the workpiece is mirror like, while after ultra precision polishing, the surface presents cross line patterns.
By overlapping and intersecting the direction of motion of grinding tools such as grinding stones or polishing belts with the direction of motion of the workpiece, the grinding process forms a series of intersecting sinusoidal curves, known as the surface effect of intersecting lines. This cross pattern has both flat and concave grooves, which gives the ultra precision polishing process a unique advantage: concave grooves allow lubricant to evenly adhere to the surface of the part, while flat surfaces provide a higher proportion of contact surface.

Cutting fluid is usually added during the machining process to reduce the heat generated by grinding (which usually changes the properties of the metal) and remove chips.
The process of grinding particles to cut the surface of a workpiece is divided into three stages.
Stage 1: When the abrasive particles just come into contact with the surface of the workpiece, the passivated abrasive particles crack and fall off, forming a new cutting surface;
Phase 2: Grinding the workpiece with abrasive particles on the new cutting surface;
Phase 3: After grinding, the grinding particles become dull and the surface geometric characteristics of the workpiece are strengthened.

What is the difference between ultra precision polishing and ordinary precision polishing?
During ordinary precision grinding, a large amount of heat is generated and high material removal alters the microstructure and surface hardness of the workpiece. This also creates some surface imperfections.
During ultra precision polishing, the processing temperature is lower, and the removal of lower material from the workpiece improves its surface characteristics.
The rotation speed range of ultra precision polished workpieces is 1-15 meters per minute, with the optimal value being within 6-14 meters per minute. Compared to ordinary precision grinding at 1800-3500 meters per minute, it is much lower. In addition, the pressure applied by the ultra precision polishing tool on the workpiece is much smaller, usually ranging from 0.02 to 0.07 MPa, or as high as 2.06 MPa. The pressure for ordinary precision grinding is between 13.7-137.3 MPa.
The vibration frequency of the ultra precision polishing tool is between 200 and 1000 per minute, with an amplitude of 1 to 5mm.
Main advantages
With the development of moving parts, the demand for refinement is also increasing. A more uniform distribution of lubricants and a higher friction pressure ratio, as well as better micro geometric properties, make the ultra precision polishing process have the following advantages:
l Reduce friction
l Extend the lifespan of the workpiece
l High dimensional accuracy
l Improve sealing performance
l Reduce energy consumption
l Run quieter
